Registered Nurse II-Telephonic Triage

Incumbent is responsible for telephone triage of patients’ medical questions and concerns. Incumbent is a Registered Nurse with clinical knowledge and experience enabling support for the efficient and effective operations of TCC’s call center while providing a superior customer experience for TCC patients and staff. This individual will follow appropriate national standards for the telephone triage process of medical complaints and health questions, while following evidenced-based decision making algorithms to address each caller’s concerns. Incumbent will provide clear directions for recommended patient dispositions, or appropriate instructions for safe at home self-management of medical issues. The telephone triage nurse will maintain an up to date understanding of the treatment and referral options for patients calling from any location within the TCC region. Incumbent will ensure that residents of both rural and urban communities receive the best possible guidance to address their medical concerns and are referred to needed care that can be provided in a timely fashion in the most appropriate location. Representative Duties: Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing the incumbent: Answers incoming calls from patients and accurately assesses their symptoms. Follows established protocols to determine the urgency of the patient’s situation or concern and identifies the appropriate medical recommendation and course of action. Documents all patient related communication accurately in the electronic health record. Communicates with other medical professionals, such as medical staff and community health aides, to ensure the timeliness and continuity of care. Prioritizes and escalates emergent situations to the appropriate health care providers. Provides patient education for safe self-management of medical concerns as appropriate per triage protocols. Participates in organizational planning and review in order to support quality assurance and quality improvement of services provided to TCC’s internal and external clients. Other Responsibilities: Performs other duties as requested. May be required to travel periodically to attend in-person training, organizational planning meetings, and orientation to rural communities throughout the TCC region. Incumbents working remotely, outside of Fairbanks, may be required to travel both to Fairbanks and to villages served by TCC. Visiting rural sites may require travel by small plane, boat, or ATV.
