Job Description

At COPA, the RN Triage Specialist role is built for pediatric nurses who thrive on clinical decision-making, work efficiently, and move with purpose. This position offers the opportunity to use advanced assessment skills to support infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents remotely. Requirements

Required: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing program. Required: Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Oregon and license must be in good standing; BSN preferred. Required: Oregon licensure as required for education. Graduate of an accredited Nursing program, BSN preferred. Current Oregon RN Licensure and license must be in good standing. Required: Current CPR for Healthcare Provider. PALS preferred. Recognized certifications in addition to OR RN (required) include: CPN, CPEN, OHA HCI Qualified or Certified Interpreter. Experience: Nursing experience required; pediatric experience and telephone triage preferred. Experience with working with electronic medical records systems and MS Office. Epic experience preferred. Bilingual in Spanish and English a plus. Physical Requirements: Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level in person, over the telephone or through use of other required technology. Sitting or standing for long periods of time. Frequent repetitive motion includes computer keyboard use, reaching with hands and arms, and walking. Occasional lifting and or moving up to 30 pounds and on rare occasion up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include viewing computer monitor for long periods of time, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. You must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Working Conditions: Work inside in a general medical office or personal office (HIPAA Compliant) setting with ergonomically configured equipment. Must maintain a consistent and reliable home internet connection that meets the technical requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this remote role. A minimum internet speed of 100 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload is required to effectively support COPA systems, secure applications, and video communication. A professional, confidential, and quiet work environment must be maintained at all times to ensure patient privacy and high-quality service.

Responsibilities

Maintains an in-depth knowledge of principles, practices, standards, and techniques and demonstrates knowledge in accordance with COPA policies and procedures within pertinent laws and regulations in the following areas: Performs structured pediatric telephone triage using approved protocols, clinical pathways, and decision-support tools (e.g., Epic, ClearTriage) to assess symptoms, determine urgency, and recommend appropriate disposition. Applying sound clinical judgment to guide patient and caregiver conversations efficiently and safely within established triage standards. Documents, assessments, advice given, and patient/family responses clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner in the electronic health record. Provides concise, developmentally appropriate education, including safety-net instructions and return precautions, and supports patient self-management when appropriate. Maintains current knowledge of pediatric nursing practices, immunization schedules, medication safety, and evidence-based triage standards; adheres to COPA policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory and professional standards. Demonstrates effective time management and prioritization in a high-volume, acuity-driven environment; collaborates with clinical team and leadership and participates in orientation and training as assigned. Provides oversight and support for assigned in-basket tasks, ensuring timely review, prioritization, and resolution of messages while managing fluctuating volumes efficiently. May be asked to participate in the training program for all new hires. Performs other related work directed by immediate supervisor. Manage triage workload in accordance with safe, evidence-based practice and departmental standards. Follow internal operational guidelines related to triage workload expectations, recognizing that call volume and duration may vary based on patient age, acuity, complexity, and documentation requirements. Maintain high standards for quality of assessment, protocol adherence, accurate documentation, and patient safety. Participate in productivity monitoring and information sharing to support transparency and equitable workload distribution.
